With the heat of summer fast approaching and thoughts of vacation starting to creep into our daydreams it might be time to do a quick check on your workout routine.  What are your plans?  How will you stay motivated?  Are your goals changing? If yes, then maybe your workout routine should get a quick tune-up too.  Picking up a Summer Membership might be just what you need to keep your motivation going strong and get the most out of your summer!

Find your fun

Summer is a very distracting time of year.  There is simply so much to do!  Summer concerts and festivals, patios, beaches, vacations and just so much fun in the sun.  With all these and more distractions trying to stay in a fitness and health routine can be challenging.  So how do you keep going? Find something fun to throw into your workouts.  Forget the monotonous, sweaty struggle for the ‘summer ready body’ – you should be looking forward to your workouts.  If it doesn’t put a smile on your face it might not be right for you.

Keeping on the theme of fun, maybe this is the time to try out something new.  A new fitness class or running routine might be in order; or have you ever tried the TRX or Jacob’s Ladder?  Spice it up and enjoy every second, because gearing yourself up for your workout is really the biggest battle.  Once you are here and feeling good you’ll be motivated to keep going, so why not make your workout something to look forward to?

Don’t Stress

If there is any time of year when we should be trying to soak in all the positive energy it should be at a time of renewal and growth; namely, spring and summer.  Stressing about reaching your fitness goals will only make you frustrated and resentful of your workouts.  Set yourself up for success by setting your routine and making sure that you always have a place to get your fitness on.  Stay flexible by giving yourself as many options as possible.  Try an outdoor workout or, if you hate training in the heat, take your workout indoors.  Here at Carleton we have so much to keep you going.  Outdoor Bootcamps, quick and intense fitness classes like Tabata, and relaxing yoga are all options you can register for individually or as part of our CUFit Pass.  If you prefer a combination of individual and group workouts, use of the entire Fitness Center and pool with your Summer Membership might be more your speed.   With so many choices finding an excuse to skip your workout may not be an option.

Get the most out of your summer

With so much to pull you out of doors in the spring and summer time why would you ever want to train inside?  For some people training outside is where they find their bliss; for others, not so much.  Try it out and see which option is the best fit for you.  If you thrive on some structured training come inside and experience a quieter gym (benefit from some of your friends being outside and sneak that workout in before you head outdoors!), the benefits of climate control (you will always know that the gym is ready for you rain or shine, blazing heat or freezing cold) and the opportunity to try out new ways of working out (so many classes to choose from; if you need a bit more guidance then why not try some personal training too!).  The old adage that “variety is the spice of life” is quite true, so go ahead and have a fun and spicy summer!
