Rec Day Program

Carleton University Rec Day Program

Each year over 4,000 local pupils from Ottawa and the surrounding areas visit Carleton University for one of the Department of Athletics’ Recreation Days. The “Rec Day” program offers schools an exciting field trip filled with sport instruction and participation in a variety of sport activities.  A recreation swim in our 50-metre pool and an all-you-can-eat lunch at the Residence Cafeteria is included in the cost of the day (there will be a $10 lunch fee for all teachers and parent volunteers). With our exceptional indoor and outdoor facilities and welcoming staff, we maintain our commitment to provide a high quality sports program in a safe and fun environment that continues come rain or shine.

Each Rec Day can be tailored for each school group with a choice of activities, flexible start and finish times and the choice of whether to swim or not swim as part of the program of activities.

Sport Choices

At each rec day, students will receive basic instruction and active participation in approximately five of these sports:

How to Book a Rec Day

Once you have decided to book a rec day, please fill in our online booking form. Please Note: We are having some issues with getting the dates updated on the online form, and the 2016 information is still displaying there at the moment. Please put your 2017 choice of date in the “Any other information field athe bottom of the form. We apologise for any inconvenience and we are working to resolve this as soon as possible.

The form will ask for your contact details and preferred date. It will also ask for a 2nd and 3rd choice in case the first date is unavailable or sold out.

It will then ask for your choice of arrival and departure time and the number of groups of 16-24 students that you would like to reserve. Your choice of which sports you would most like to participate in will also be required.

Once you submit your form, we will acknowledge receipt of your form within 24 hours and then e-mail you an invoice for the total amount within another day or two. No deposit is required at this time, the full amount is due two-weeks before your scheduled date and payment can be made by cheque or with a credit card.

FAQ – How many students should I allocate per group and how many groups should I book for?

We allow a flexible amount of students to be allocated to each group, anywhere between 16 and 24. Last year the average number of attendees per group was just over 19 per group. We’ve found in the past that this seems to be about the ideal group size for activities. However, we are flexible in allowing larger or smaller groups to allow for classes to stay together, or reduce the cost per student.

Further Information

Our online FAQs page answers many frequently asked questions that teachers, administrators and principals have when planning their Recreation Day.

The group list/waiver form template for schools which have booked a rec day also be found online.

Although dates are normally allocated on a “first come first served” basis, in order to ease the process of larger groups to be able to find a suitable date with a large enough capacity to accommodate them, we will be allowing schools booking more than 5 groups to pre-register on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd of February.

Just wanted to pass along a sincere thank you for all your help in coordinating the logistics of the visits for Carleton Rec. Day for Fisher/Summit.  There was tremendous positive feedback from students (loved the different sports, seeing the “Red Blacks”, in awe of the facility, and couldn’t stop talking about the lunch buffet!!!) and from the staff (amazing organization of the day and competence of staff – some were former Fisher students!).  We’d be thrilled to have this opportunity continue as a new tradition for Fisher/Summit and look forward to returning next year.  Thank you again for all your support and flexibility,

– Jennifer (Principal, Fisher Park/Summit Alternative PS)
