Carleton University’s New Fitness Centre

Carleton University Student’s made their voices heard and voted in favour of an athletics fee increase, which will give them access to the new 11,000 sq. ft. Official Carleton University Fitness Centre with a vast variety of modern equipment.

The new Fitness Centre will replace the cardio room and provide students and members with a facility facing Bronson Ave. That features a lot of windows and tons of natural light.

On Feb. 8 and 9, 2,729 students, about 70 percent of those who voted, cast their ballots in favour of the new fitness centre. Another 1,087 voted against it. The high voter turnout for single-question voting was very encouraging and indicative of the importance students attach to on-campus fitness facilities.

The current 5,700 sq. ft. The fitness centre is too small to support a Carleton student population of close to 27,000. It will be converted into two sections: a high-performance athlete heavyweight room, and a general student activity space for fitness and dance.

The current Carleton student athletics fee is one of the lowest in the province, at $75.80 per term or $71.93 for full-time graduate students. The proposed increase of $12.50 per semester will maintain the school’s fee below the provincial average of $91.20.

The new Carleton University Fitness Centre will cost approximately $2 million. Construction will be completed in the Spring of 2013.
