Being physically active on a daily basis is really important in order to stay healthy. Being active every day is often kept on the back burner because let’s face it we’re busy. This can be really bad for our health, especially if you are sitting at a desk all day for work or school. As we have noted in a previous article, “The Hidden Dangers of Sitting Too Much”, sitting all day can be hazardous for our health.

So the question is, “how do we stay physically active when we’re just too busy?” An easy way to stay active on a daily basis is to track your steps using a pedometer or step counter. According to research the average American takes 3,000 – 4,000 steps per day. However, 10,000 steps is recommended by health officials in order to maintain a healthy body. You’re probably thinking, 10,000 steps ?!! Don’t worry it’s not as crazy as it sounds. Getting 10,000 steps can be easy if you make small, gradual changes to daily activities.

Here, I have comprised a list of things you can incorporate into your daily routine that are fun, effortless and easy!

  • Walk or bike to places instead of taking the bus
  • Put your breaks to use and take a stroll around campus
  • Dance around the living room to your favorite music
  • Walk across campus to get coffee
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Hide your remote and change the volume or channels manually
  • Go window shopping or walk around the mall
  • Park away from entrances
  • When taking the bus get off a stop or two early
  • Go out dancing
  • Play Pokemon Go (Suggestion by Uly Neves)

Small changes can make a world of difference. Add some of the ideas to your daily routine and you’ll be well on your way to better health.
