Capital Renewal Fee
Effective January 1st, 2026, Carleton University Athletics and Recreation will introduce a Capital Renewal Fee (CRF) across many of our non-student programs, services, and facility uses.
Planning for a Sustainable Future
Introducing the Capital Renewal Fee allows us to:
- Address immediate infrastructure priorities
- Reduce deferred maintenance
- Ensure long-term sustainability of Carleton’s athletic and recreation facilities
Our commitment is to provide a welcoming, inclusive, and well-maintained environment for the entire Carleton community.
About the Capital Renewal Fee
The fee was approved following a comprehensive review of capital requirements and long-term planning and is in line with other facilities within the region. All revenue generated will go directly into a dedicated Capital Renewal Fund – none will be used for daily operations or administrative costs.
The fee will apply to specific NON-STUDENT memberships, programs, facility bookings, and pay-per-use services.
How Much Will This Cost?
A fee of up to 5% will be applied to memberships, programs, leagues, children’s programs, pay-per-use activities, and facility rentals.
Certain programs and memberships may be exempt.
Upcoming Examples of Capital Projects
- 2026 Fieldhouse Heating/Cooling System Replacement: Original equipment does not have cooling functionality. With today’s heat waves and the popularity of our summer camps it’s increasingly imperative we provide cooling in this space. Not only will this unit provide cooling, but it will be an efficient air source heat pump which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well.
- Fully Electric Zamboni: To further our environmental commitments, we would like to introduce a fully electric Zamboni to our Advanced Capital Ice House operations. The purchase of a Zamboni 650 Electric delivers stronger torque, zero emissions, lower operating costs, quieter performance, and fast opportunity charging, making it cleaner, more cost-effective, and more efficient than natural-gas models. It is anticipated that switching from natural gas to electric will avoid emissions equivalent to taking six commuter vehicles off the road each year.
- Enhancements to the Pool Envelope and Structure: This multi-month project is designed to ensure the ongoing quality and longevity of the pool through testing and repairing tiling in the pool basin (shallow and deep ends) and pool deck, replacing seals in the underwater windows and lighting system, and performing targeted steel recoating.
Transparency and Accountability
Transparency, responsible financial stewardship, and ongoing communication remain central to our approach.
