Carleton University Aquatic Staff – Job Opportunities

CU Pool Staff App SprSum2025

All new applicants are required to attend a Rescue skills screening prior to hire. This screening will involve an assessment of guarding, first aid and CPR skills, along with Instructional and stroke assessment. Additional Lifeguarding Emergency situations skills may assess if the # of participants and availability of time permits.

Spring & Summer Employment (May – August)

Thursday March 27, 7:30 – 9:30pm

Late Spring & Summer Only Employment (June and/or July & August)

Friday May 9, 5:30 – 7:30pm

 

If your certifications and application do not meet the minimum CU Standards, you will be advised via email that you will not be invited to attend the New Staff Screening. All applicants who meet the minimum requirement will receive an invitation to the screening via email. Please follow up with an email to aquatics@carleton.ca if you have not heard from CU Aquatics manager before screening date … OR if you decide NOT to attend the screening.

Interviews for new candidates will be set up following a successful screening. These interviews will be approximately 20-25 minutes in duration.

General Job Description

The Carleton University Lifeguards and Instructors are responsible for the oversight of all Aquatics programming in our 50m pool. This includes recreational & fitness swims, learn to swim and lifesaving programs, special bookings, and rental programs. The Carleton Pool offers aquatics courses and freelance swimming for Carleton Students, Staff, Faculty and Community Members. The Student Staff supervise all fitness & recreational swims with a commitment to safety, public education, prevention and emergency response.

Responsibilities

  • All Lifeguard/Instructors attend New Staff Orientation sessions, along with mandatory Staff In-Service Training sessions as scheduled through out the term and successfully complete a Rescue Skill Assessments at standard.
  • Student staff are provided with ways to maintain appropriate fitness levels in order to be ready to respond to any critical emergency/rescue in the pool or elsewhere in the Athletics Facility.
  • Staff are encouraged to take more advanced aquatics leadership courses such as First Aid Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor, Advanced Lifesaving Instructor, Lifesaving Examiners and Swim for Life Instructor Trainer.
  • Effective communication and ongoing constructive feedback are the pillars of the team.
  • Student Staff are provided with mid-term and end of term Job Performance Evaluations, ensuring that the Student Lifeguard/Instructors are maintaining the Carleton Standard and always striving to improve and succeed.
  • Student staff are given the opportunity to development their leadership skills and advance their role on our team.

Experience/Skills Required

  • Certifications Required for Lifeguard/Instructors: Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard, Standard First Aid CPR-C AED & Lifesaving Swim Instructor (at minimum)Lifesaving Instructor & Standard or Emergency First Aid Instructor, Examiner, Airway Management or other Lifesaving leadership qualifications are additional assets.
