Starting a new year can be like pressing the reset button. It’s the perfect time to reinvent yourself. It’s for setting goals and becoming a better you. Getting active is a great way to do this. Not only does being active challenge you physically but it also challenges you mentally. It can help you look and feel great too. There are various fun and creative ways to get active such as taking a fitness class.

Fitness classes are demanding, yet so entertaining that you often forget you’re working out. Lucky for us Carleton’s Athletics Department offers over 95 different fitness programs. These fitness programs are open to anyone and Carleton students get a discount (yay for discounts). These classes are taught by top notch professionals who have lots of experience teaching fitness classes. Attending a class or two will no doubt be a fantastic experience and well worth the money.

Here are a few of Carleton’s most interesting, creative and fun fitness programs.

Dance Class

Aqua Zumba

Nicknamed “The Zumba Pool Party”, Aqua Zumba is an exciting way to get fit. It will leave you feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the world. Aqua Zumba is a combination of traditional Zumba and aquatic fitness which works to tone and sculpt your body. Carleton Athletics offers Aqua Zumba six times a week. Choose a time that works for you and join the party.


This one’s for the ladies. Burlesque is a sexy dance that will help build strength, balance and confidence. It practices retro dance styles in a fun, laid-back environment and it’s recommended that you bring high heels. What more could you ask for? Let your inner sexy shine ladies.


Rich in history, Capoeria is a form of martial arts which combines combat dance with acrobatics. Acrobatics and combat dance is definitely a power duo. It’s rich in culture and sure to provide an exhilarating work out.

Hip Hop Spicy Cardio Fitness

Hip Hop Spicy Cardio Fitness is an extremely hot and funky dance that incorporates Hip Hop, Burlesque, Bollywood, and Belly Dancing. This class will burn off the calories in no time and leave you with lots of energy as well as feeling confident and sassy.


As the name suggests, Piloxing is a combination of pilates, boxing and dance. It’s a fast paced core and strength work out that’s sure to be an entertaining workout that makes you feel powerful. This is a new fitness program at Carleton and is offered at a discounted price for everyone.

Aqua Zumba, Burlesque, Capeoria, Hip Hop Spicy Cardio and Piloxing are only a small handful of the 95+ fitness programs that Carleton University Athletics offers to their students and community.
