With so many changes and uncertainties engulfing the start of the 2020-2021 school year, a staple of the Carleton student experience is officially returning this Fall: intramurals.

With games beginning later this month, Carleton Athletics is offering intramural leagues in four social distance friendly sports – volleyball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, and hockey. This will give students who reside on and off campus a great chance to socialize and stay active in a moment when these opportunities are scarce.

Participants will have to make some adjustments to accommodate social distancing guidelines, however. Several of the sports have had to incorporate rule changes in order to be played safely. Soccer, for example, has eliminated heading to reduce the likelihood of virus transmission. Overall, the changes are minor and in accordance with prevailing provincial guidelines.

With so few sporting activities available throughout the city, Carleton Athletics Leagues Coordinator Josh Shaw says that demand for intramural teams is extremely high. “If you are interested in signing up a team or by yourself, you’ll need to do it quickly,” Shaw said. “Some of the sports are getting close to full already, which is great to see.”

The deadline to register for fall intramurals is Thursday, September 24.
