2024 Ravens Earth Science & Sports Camp (Ages 8-12)

Our Earth Science and Sports Camp in Ottawa is a fun and friendly day camp for children who want to exercise both their bodies and minds. This camp offers fun & educational science experiments for kids. If your child is fascinated by fossils, minerals, rocks and the processes that form the natural world around them, this STEM camp offers a unique opportunity to learn in a unique university setting. The Earth Science and Sports camp is a collaborative effort between the Carleton University Department of Recreation and Athletics and the Department of Earth Sciences.

Camp Price (Includes a Cafeteria Lunch)

The Ravens Earth Science and Sports Camp will cost $370 ($333 for a 4 day camp).

What Happens Each Day?

Half of the day will be devoted to the earth camp programming in the Carleton University Department of Earth Sciences laboratories, rock room and classrooms. Hands-on activities will provide an opportunity to explore a variety of Earth Science topics including minerals, rocks, our water resources, fossils and footprints, volcanoes and earthquakes.

The other half of the day is spent playing games and trying new sports (including) a daily swim). Sports and activities will take place in our top tier facilities such as our Ravens Field, Ravens Perch (stadium field), Norm Fenn Gym, Fieldhouse and Olympic-sized swimming pool. Children are encouraged to try new activities, and each week, activities are tailored to the abilities of the children. Most importantly, we emphasize being active and having fun!

Age Range

Children who are between 8 and 12 years old. The camp will be split into two groups with each group having a 1-3 year age range.

Earth Sciences and Sport Camp Activities

Earth Sciences activities will include explorations of minerals and how they are used in our daily lives,  how fossils and footprints are made and what they can tell us, the processes behind volcanoes and earthquakes and other natural hazards, and explorations of earth processes that shape our landscape. It may include an opportunity to visit and work in our rock preparation facility were we cut and polish rocks for further research and field trip to visit rocks in their natural habitat at Prince of Wales Park (Hogsback Falls) is also planned (weather dependent).

Sport Activities may include playing a number of games and trying different sports such as: Ball Hockey, Basketball, Field Hockey, Soccer, Tchoukball, Touch Rugby, Ultimate, Track & Field, and Water Games. Each day we prepare two schedules, one containing indoor and outdoor activities and one with just indoor activities, to keep the kids active no matter the weather.

What’s included

The registration fee includes a t-shirt, recreational swim and a full cafeteria lunch. Please note our cafeteria does not use any peanut or tree nuts in their recipes, and does not purchase products with peanuts or tree nuts in the ingredient list. However, there is always a risk of cross-contamination due to its open kitchens and self-serve style. Hence, we advise parents of children with food allergies to communicate these allergies to us when registering.

Dates & Times

  • Session 1: July 22 to July 26
  • Session 2: July 29 to August 2
  • Session 3: August 6 to August 9 (4 days)
  • The hours of the camp are from 8:30am to 4:30pm daily
    • Drop off is from 8:30am to 9:00am
    • Pick up is from 4:00pm to 4:30pm
    • Drop off & pick up will take place outdoors on TAAG Park (stadium field).
  • Optional early/late care will be offered at a cost of $30 for the week.
      • Early care runs from 7:30am to 8:30am
      • Late care runs from 4:30pm to 5:30pm
