This program is tailored for people 55 years of age or older. The three 90-minute land classes include a thorough warm-up and stretch, cardiovascular activity, all-important strengthening exercises and a relaxing cool-down. There is one 60-minute session in the pool (shallow water) during normal circumstances but currently we are unable to offer the pool swim due to COVID. The goal of the class is to meet the goals of the participants. We try to be aware of what those are, and coach people as they work toward them. Some people are seeking to maintain a certain level of fitness – strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, sense of well-being. Some people are recovering from surgery or a specific injury. (Some are referred by the Heart Institute.) Some people are combining the classes with other intentional aspects of their lifestyle – walking more, swimming, yoga, looking after grandchildren, etc. Some participants are concerned about bone density, and want to do as much weight-bearing workout as possible. Some want to be better able to avoid falls or injuries. Some are most aware of the relationship between exercise and cognitive ability.
